Hey Rudy! How are you?
Doing good these days keeping busy ya know.
For anyone who isn’t familiar with the brand, Tell us a little bit about yourself and about Big Boy Vintage.
Big Boy Vintage started last fall. It grew out of the frustration of many vintage places not really carrying clothes in sizes large and up. So I decided to start BBV. We carry vintage and used clothing in sizes large and up and 38 waist and up. We also carry accessories and other knick knacks at our pop up events.
The stuff you sell is pretty rad. You have a few amazing band Tees like you had a tour shirt from the no Doubt tragic kingdom tour and Ru Paul tees thats amazing! Im a big fan of your logo tees. (Like the one I’m wearing in the photo!) Tell us a little about your logo.
Well we are trying our best to carry rad stuff. I am glad that people are into it. Our logo was designed by Matt better known by all his fans as Ultragraphique. I basically told him what I wanted and he drew him up in many versions and we finally settled on the one that now exists. Which I think is super cute!
If you could recommend one record and one movie that would help us get to know you and BBV better what would it be?
Ha that is way to hard…I mean it musically it would be maybe something like Bikini Kill, The Germs, Siouxsie & the Banshees. But they also change the following day to like Trina, the Cover Girls, the Marvalettes. I guess it just depends on the day. For movie I am going to go with Pretty in Pink.
You have some pretty hot models in your calendar- we have a few to give away as prizes- where do you find your models?
I met most of the boys who model through tumblr or various internet sites. Though these days the newer models are being recommended by friends or the models themselves or our fans.
I think there has been so many campaigns and stuff in the press over the years about models being too skinny and “big is beautiful” but most the emphasis is on girls.
Do you think it’s important to show that bigger boys are just as fly?
I mean there is notion that boys don’t care about fashion or have body issues. It is so lame. I mean I have been a big boy my whole life and I have always been into clothes. It has been a journey to grow and love myself no matter what size I am. I know that clothes have played a big role in feeling better about my body. So I think that this idea of providing a place for boys to find rad clothes in bigger sizes is an extension of that. So yeah I do think it is important to show big boys with good style or crop tops and your belly out.
What are you top 5 prize possessions?
These days it would be my vintage Raiders jacket, vintage floral denim blazer, Kurt and Courtney Sassy mag issue, my 7inch record collection, and a drawing of Boy George my older brother did in the 80’s when he was in 7th grade.
Best thing you’ve ever picked up in a vintage store?
I have so many good pairs of short shorts that i love.

Where would u take me on our date?
I would probably take you to a really awesome hillside with a view of LA and have dinner while the sunsets. Or actually I would probably save that for the second or third date. I would take you for tacos and some sort of adventure out in the city. I am more into spontaneous stuff… but it would involve some sort of food.

um with you hopefully nothing by the end of it.

BBV will be releasing a zine in May with contributions by our fans and friends. We are also going to hopefully have a more permanent space for people to shop in Los Angeles by the summer. With the hope of eventually having our own space. There are so many other fun things in the works but we are keeping quiet about those!

I’ve been a big Twin Shadow fan for a long time now, and his latest album ‘Confess’ is just as good, if not better than his last ‘Forget.’ This song ‘Five Seconds’ is amazing. I remember when I first heard it thinking it should be taken from a scene in an Eighties movie, a part where the guy only has a matter of time (Five seconds perhaps!) before his girl is kidnapped and killed, or abducted by aliens, or even worse, made to listen to Will.i.am. I weirdly stumbled upon the video on youtube and its really special. Twin shadow writes and performs the most heart felt romanic music, Love songs I guess you could say. But not like the slushy bullshit love songs you normally hear, they are more reflective of love itself. Dirty, desperate and gut wrenching at times. My all time favourite Twin Shadow song has to be ‘Slow’ I remember when I was going though a break up, his lyrics “I don’t wanna believe, or be in love” seemed hauntingly accurate back then. This particular performance (This one here!) is perfection. I just watched it again and it literally gave me goosebumps so bad, its gorgeous. Even writing this has made me realise just how much I love them. However Five Seconds is just as rad. This video is the first part of two that follow on from each other and tell a story. Don’t get too excited though, I spent the whole video hoping that they would run away together and buy a dog, or kiss, or fuck! However you’ll see from the next instalment ‘Patient’ that things get complicate when a girl get involved. Thank fuck I’m a fag! Enjoy guys x

Hey, I’m really tired just now, I was DJing two nights in a row - Friday night at Power Lunches in Dalston and Saturday evening at my party, Debbie, in Bethnal Green.
So you are an illustrator right? Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Yes apart from the DJing I am an illustrator and comics artist. My comics and drawings are mainly autobiographical and deal with my life, my fantasies and my experiences, and my main themes are love, sex, and relationships.
What inspires you?
My friends, their experiences and my own; music and pop culture; mythology and magic.
You’re a very prolific artist, how to motivate yourself?
It’s a struggle because I always have so much to do, but in the end it;’s about deciding what you want to do the most and setting boundaries that allow you to devote time to your art. Last year I read this amazing book called “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron that really helped me set those boundaries and helped motivate me.
What’s your most proudest achievement?
I don’t know if I just have one, but I think I’m really proud of my diary drawings and diary comics, and I’m proud of my dance party Debbie.
Your work is very self reflective. I love how you can show certain vulnerability in a lot of your art. Is that something you do intentional or natural way of working?
It’s really important to me to be as honest as I can in my work and if that means making myself vulnerable I want to be brave and “go there.” I think a lot of art about sex and relationships often rings a bit false to me, because I don’t think the artists are maybe telling it like it is as much as they could? But it is scary to go there. So I’d say it’s both a natural way of working AND something I have to work at, to stay as honest as I can.
You DJ in London too don’t you. So what do you enjoy more DJING or drawing?!
Well they are very very different! Drawing is something that’s very quiet and solitary and personal, and at the same time you’re really exposing part of yourself to people, and hopefully it makes people think or amuses them but probably in quite a quiet way. DJing is kind of more of a extroverted performance and you’re sharing music with people and most of the time just making them want to dance! Not to say that can’t also be very emotional but it’s very different so I can’t pick!

Maybe Kate & Anna McGarrigle’s first album, which I think is a really beautiful record. As for movies, I’d say Elvira, Desperately Seeking Susan or Romy & Michele’s High School Reunion for my more playful side and Hellraiser, Mulholland Drive and Vertigo for the dark, complicated stuff.
